1. The semantic code of "son": a neglected philosophical dimension
The word "zi" is far more than just a honorific name for "sir" and "teacher" in the pre-Qin context. Confucius, Lao Tzu, Mozi, Son of Heaven, Gentleman, and Chili-these terms share the same word "son" but point to completely different connotations. Is there an unspoken clue between them? If we extract "zi" from daily language and put it into a philosophical perspective, we will find that it exposes a hidden structure: "zi" is not a self-sufficient title, but a relational mark-it always points to something beyond itself.
This paper attempts to reveal this structure and connect it with the concept of "virtue" in Lao Tzu's philosophy to see whether the two can form a complete explanatory framework.
2. Multiple directions of "son": from person to object to abstraction
The term "child" covers an extremely wide range of fields, but their deep structure is the same.
1. The "Son" of Man: Three Orders
| appellation | Pointed order | acquisition methods | failure condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Emperor | destiny | Consanguinity and patriarchal clan system | If you lose your virtue, your destiny will change |
| gentleman | virtue | self-cultivation | Self-deception leads to failure |
| Zhuzi (Kong Laomo, etc.) | said | Evidence and Speech | Tao is lost, but it will not exist |
The son of heaven is the node of political order, the gentleman is the node of moral order, and the sons of sons are the node of ideological order. They are independent but share the same structure:“sub”is a bigger“what”Representative or extension in the world.
2. The "child" of things: the node between nature and artificial
The structure of "son" is not limited to people. Many things are also called "sons" because they also carry things beyond themselves.
| appellation | Pointed order | Role as node |
|---|---|---|
| seed | Life inheritance | Gene vector connecting mother strain and new strain |
| pawn | The whole game | The intersection of the will of the chess player and the evolution of the game |
| beads | String and Pearl String | Connecting unit of individual and overall |
| Eisenia | The Tao is not dyed | The natural state of early life |
A seed does not call itself a seed, but it carries all the genetic possibilities of the tree. A chess piece does not call itself a chess piece, but its position on the board determines the direction of the entire game. "Child" is not an "identity" here, but a "location"-it is the opening through which a larger system operates.
3. The abstract "child": the smallest unit of structure and logic
Further,"sub" also extends to the abstract field:
| appellation | Pointed order | Role as node |
|---|---|---|
| factor | causal chain | constituent element |
| molecular | material whole | Connecting micro and macro |
| electronic | Energy and circuits | Basic carrier of electricity |
| quantum | physical reality | Boundaries between certainty and uncertainty |
None of these "children" have a "personality", but they are also nodes-they are the smallest unit, basic carrier, or constituent element of a larger order. As a structure,"son" has penetrated into all levels of nature, humanities, science, and logic.
3. From "Zi" to "De": A Lao Tzu's Framework
If the "son" is a "node of a greater order", then what is this "greater order"? In Lao Tzu's hand, this answer already exists:Tao.
Lao Tzu said: "Tao is born, and virtue breeds it." Tao is the origin of all things, which is holistic and invisible; and "virtue" is the manifestation, implementation and role of Tao in specific things. The growth of a tree, a person's behavior, and the order of an era are all manifestations of "Tao" at specific nodes through "virtue".
If you put "children" into this framework:
“sub”isTao pass“de”Nodes that appear on specific things.
In other words,"son" is not as simple as "a virtuous person", but "the position where Tao appears as virtue here." Any kind of "son" is essentially the carrier of Tao in a certain specific dimension.
4. The inter-embedded relationship between "son" and "virtue"
"Zi" and "virtue" are not two separate things, they are two aspects of the same event.
1. Without "son","virtue" will appear nowhere
Tao is universal, but it must fall on concrete things to be seen. Without seeds, the tree's "virtue of life" cannot be continued; without gentlemen, benevolence cannot be manifested in human relations; without Confucius, the Confucian Way is just a set of unfinished words. "Virtue" is not floating, it needs "Zi" as a carrier.
2. There is no "virtue","son" is just an empty seat
If the Son of Heaven does not have the virtue of destiny, he is just a person sitting on the throne, not a "Son of Heaven". If a seed does not have the ability to germinate, it is just a withered particle, not a "seed". If a person called "Zi" says something that is not true, he will no longer be called "Zi" by later generations.
"Zi" is not an eternal identity, but a dynamic manifestation. When virtue no longer appears through it, it returns to its normal state.
3. The two are "body and use" relationships
From the perspective of "position", it is a "child"-it is an opening for Tao in the world. From the perspective of "manifestation", it is "virtue"-it is the visible content that Tao flows out through this opening. The two are inseparable and have no precedence. Just as there is no light source without light, there is no light source without light source.
5. Transparency and blocking: Two states of nodes
As nodes,"children" are not always smooth. It may allow "virtue" to flow freely, or it may block it.
transparent“sub”: Being able to let Tao appear into virtue without obstacles. Pure children, seeds, and transparent gentlemen all belong to this category. They are not attached to themselves, so the Tao can pass smoothly.
blocked“sub”: Persistence in oneself blocks the manifestation of Tao. The son of heaven who has lost his virtue, the gentleman who deceives himself, and the scholar who adheres to his name and appearance all belong to this category. They occupy the position of "children", but no longer perform the function of "children".
The boundary between transparency or not lies in whether the "child" is attached to himself. If a seed adheres to "I am a seed", it will not germinate; if a child adheres to "I am a child", it will no longer be a child. Similarly, if a practitioner is obsessed with "I am practicing", the practice itself becomes a hindrance.
6. Conclusion: Become a "child" without knowing it
The relationship between "son" and "virtue" ultimately points to not a definition, but a state:letDe ZiranAppear without confirmation“I am the One Who Appears”。
A real "son" will not call himself "I am a son". Just as Confucius said,"People don't get angry if they don't know it," and Lao Tzu said,"The beginning of the nameless world", the real node does not need to be marked-it just needs to remain transparent and let the path flow.
Therefore, the final state of a "child" is not "becoming a better child", butBecome a child without knowing it。When a person no longer needs to be sure what he is, he is the closest to the node itself. And that node, among other things, is the way the Tao is manifesting itself here and now-through this person, this thing, this location.
