Micro-level Application
Roots & Presence
Practice in the World 存在≠功能——论无用之用
Science · AI · the Future
Roots & Presence
Micro-level Application
Science · AI · the Future
Macro-level Observation
Science · AI · the Future
Micro-level Application
Roots & Presence
Science · AI · the Future
Philosophy, Dialogue & Heritage
Roots & Presence
Philosophy, Dialogue & Heritage
Micro-level Application
Roots & Presence
Roots & Presence
Roots & Presence
Macro-level Observation
Practice in the World
Roots & Presence
Roots & Presence
Roots & Presence
Science · AI · the Future AI
Science · AI · the Future

Macro-level Observation

Roots & Presence
Roots & Presence
Roots & Presence
Roots & Presence

Philosophy, Dialogue & Heritage
Roots & Presence
Roots & Presence

Roots & Presence
Roots & Presence
Micro-level Application
Practice in the World
Micro-level Application
Science · AI · the Future
Micro-level Application
Philosophy, Dialogue & Heritage
Philosophy, Dialogue & Heritage

Roots & Presence

Science · AI · the Future
Science · AI · the Future
Roots & Presence

Roots & Presence

Science · AI · the Future

Science · AI · the Future

Macro-level Observation
Macro-level Observation
Philosophy, Dialogue & Heritage
Macro-level Observation
Science · AI · the Future
Science · AI · the Future

Practice in the World
Philosophy, Dialogue & Heritage
Science · AI · the Future

Practice in the World
Roots & Presence
Roots & Presence

Philosophy, Dialogue & Heritage
Roots & Presence

Macro-level Observation
Roots & Presence

Roots & Presence
Roots & Presence

Roots & Presence

Overture The Neutrality and Modernization of Root-and-Presence Thought
The core feature of root thought is an unusual neutrality. This neutrality is not an absence of values but a structural restraint: it proposes no concrete idea of the good, grants no particular tradition priority, and does not turn the root itself into an ideology. This restraint allows root thought to serve as a structural medium through which Confucian, Buddhist, Daoist, and other traditions can engage in joint recognition without being swallowed up or replaced. At the same time, this neutrality means that root thought does not directly adjudicate questions of power or ethical struggle. The paper argues that only by consciously undertaking this “structural restraint” can root thought truly become modern: not as a new system of truth, but as a shared substrate among different systems — one that keeps them from scattering and can return to itself in the course of operation.

Introduction; (1) root-layer concepts: the root, coexistence, skew …
Roots & Presence The Emanation of Coexistence: A Pre-Ethical Structural Genealogy — Tension, Polarity, Rhythm, Direction, Return, Resonance, Latency and Manifestness, Measure
Suspending morality and worldly intent, this paper re-explores how “coexistence” emanates a pre-ethical structure from its own sameness. Earlier understandings of coexistence were often shaped by Confucian virtues and leaned toward the level of felt connection — benevolence, sincerity, trust. Without denying that level, the paper holds that it is not coexistence’s original form. Coexistence first emanates not virtues but structures: tension, polarity, rhythm, direction, return, resonance, latency and manifestness, measure. Only because these structures come first can virtues acquire a ground in the human world. Taking this as its axis, the paper re-lays the genealogy of coexistence and answers a more fundamental question: we put virtue first only because we already stand within the broken.
Macro-level Observation The Tendency to Order on the Scale of Social Relations (Illustrated)
This paper carries the structural concept of the “tendency to order” down from the ontological scale to the scale of social relations, and examines how it appears in interpersonal, group, and institutional life. It argues that the tendency to order is neither a pursuit of order nor a scheme of social control, but the “not-yet-scattered” state that self-sustaining relational structures naturally take in collective life. Order in social relations is not manufactured; it is what remains when relations are unbroken, boundaries returnable, and direction still clear. Starting from the premises that relation precedes substance, coexistence precedes direction, and the unbroken line, the paper analyzes how order in social relations arises and how it is destroyed — and why, under technological acceleration and individualizing pressure, the tendency to order has become an unnoticed yet crucial substrate of society.
Micro-level Application The Tendency to Order as Native to the Human Being, and Its Place “Before Good and Evil” (Illustrated)
This paper attempts to identify something native to the human being: a tendency to order. It is not a moral sense produced by upbringing, not a norm implanted by external institutions, and not a state won through cultivation — it is a fundamental structure that exists prior to good and evil, prior to practice, prior to value judgment. This tendency shows itself as “not yet scattered.” A person who is still present may not be virtuous, but is consistent; may not be righteous, but still holds an unbroken line of existence. The paper distinguishes “not yet scattered” from “good and evil”: good and evil belong to discrimination after manifestation, whereas the tendency to order belongs to what is so before manifestation. This distinction corrects the dangerous phrase “beyond good and evil” into “prior to good and evil.” To be prior to good and evil is not to stand above morality, but to be not yet torn from oneself. It does not lead to an amoral freedom but to an unbroken continuity and an honest return. This tendency to order is not a rare height in human beings; it lies in the everyday life of those who have not yet scattered themselves.
Roots & Presence The Unbroken Line: The Root, Coexistence, and the Tethering of All Things (Illustrated)
One of the core insights of the root system is “the unbroken line”: however far manifestation skews, wanders, and forgets, there is always an invisible structural line that connects every being to the root. This line is not unique to humans. It precedes the human, precedes language, precedes all division. Animals, plants, water, stone, stars — all that has not yet been named “life” — are on this line. The ethical and ontological significance of the root system lies not in explaining all things with “the human” at the center, but in seeing anew that the human is the one being that, having skewed farthest, is the only one that can forget it is still on the line. The paper therefore proposes that the unbroken line is not a bond between humans and nature, but the pre-relational structure that lets humans and all things exist as different manifestations. It does not demand a moralized “love for all beings,” but offers a decentralized ground for a deeper coexistence.
Macro-level Observation From Anthropocentrism to the Interconnection of All Things (Illustrated)
This paper discusses: (1) the human is not the center of the root but one long skew of it; (2) “seeing” a tree is itself a form of joint recognition; (3) the interconnection of all things is neither a net nor a line but “a continuity of skews”; (4) why humans feel lonely; (5) moving from anthropocentrism to interconnection is a de-privileging.

Philosophy, Dialogue & Heritage Illustrated version·Much is a complete manifestation of one, and one is the root that has never been disconnected.
This article discusses: Introduction; 1. One is not the starting point of much; 2. More is the expansion of "undivided"; 3. Deflection produces much, but does not break one; 4. Relationship and essence: how much is fixed into the world.
Philosophy, Dialogue & Heritage Graphical version·Coherence: A precursor to common phenomenological light and directional alignment
This paper proposes "homology" as a phenomenological category that has not yet been fully named. The sense of harmony is not agreement of views, emotional resonance, or directional alignment. It is a primitive harmony between two beings that precedes direction, understanding, and language. It makes possible subsequent structural identification. Starting from the relationship between coexistence and direction, this paper demonstrates that homology is a phenomenological glimmer of coexistence and a weak manifestation in limited perception when coexistence is not broken. In contrast, directional alignment is the complete state of homology after structural recognition. The relationship between the two reveals the basic dynamics of WTO collaboration, interpersonal identification and idea dissemination: we start not with alignment, but with a sense of harmony. We do not understand first and then meet each other, but only in harmony can we produce a commonly recognizable direction.
Philosophy, Dialogue & Heritage Common base: A fundamental structure that spans existence and co-existence
At the intersection of Western philosophy, Indian philosophy, and China philosophy, there is a class of concepts that always surrounds the same question: Before all dualism, differences, and relationships, what makes these dimensions possible. Heidegger calls it "Gong-Being", Taoism calls it "Tao", Buddhism calls it "emptiness", and Confucianism calls it "sincerity", but this is not because traditions are divided into their own affairs. Instead, they all point to a more fundamental structure: a common basis that cannot be objectified but makes all objects possible. It is not the highest being or the beginning of all things, but the condition that allows the highest being and the beginning of existence to appear. The common basis is not an entity, but a "transcendental of relations": without it, there would be no distinction between direction and content, self and other, individual and community, nor would there be any tension and movement generated by this distinction. This paper attempts to demonstrate that the common foundation is the deep intersection of phenomenology and the study of mind and mind in East Asia and Europe. It is a structure that has not yet been fully named but has always been in operation.
Nanshan Jim's Notes Co-ordinator: A fellow who comes first when the direction is unclear
Co-recognizers do not appear out of nowhere. Before it became a co-recognizer, there was a more primitive and lighter form of existence: the harmonizer. The homophones are not yet in line with you, or even fully understand what you are doing. But in a certain position with extremely light structure, he already felt that "this is about me." This relationship is not a consensus of views or emotional identification, but the first foothold that a sense of harmony finds in a specific person. This article attempts to illustrate that the same person is not a weakened co-identifier, but the inevitable predecessor of the co-identifier. They are at the front end of the manifest chain and perform a function that is extremely easily ignored: not to determine the intersection, but to make the intersection a possibility that can be waited for. Starting from the relationship between co-ordinators and co-recognizers, this article analyzes their phenomenological characteristics and structural positions, and discusses its significance to the entry of ideas into the world, public generation and the initial formation of teams.
Overture Illustrated version·"Hand of the Root"
The roots are invisible. Roots do not enter any concept, structure or text. But people cannot help but speak and leave a direction in the world. Therefore, all discourse, models, systems and practices about roots can only become the "hand pointing to the roots." The finger is not the moon or the root, but it makes seeing possible. This article redefines the concept of pointing from the perspective of manifestation rather than possession, distinguishing three levels of indications-fingers, paths, and names-and reveals how each indication can both bring people closer to the roots and involve the risk of obscuring the roots. In the end, the "hand of the root" embodies a double paradox: it must exist, because the root cannot be grasped; it must not be mistaken for the root, because then the root is lost. The article finally pointed out that the finger borrows direction from the root, and its highest destination is not to be regarded as the root, but to silently disappear when others look back.
Science · AI · the Future The impossibility of closing π: Mathematical footnotes of skew, manifestation and infinite expansion
This article explores an image between mathematics and metaphysics: the non-computability of pi. This is not a failure of knowledge, but a clue to revealing structure. A perfect circle is undeflected, perfect, and therefore invisible. The circle appears as π only when it is "placed" in a broken, skewed, differentiated world.π brings this manifestation into mathematics: it is certain but cannot be closed; it is real but never ending. In this paper, the uncomputability of π is regarded as a structural expression. What it expresses is that when all things are deflected from the original harmony, they enter an endless process of expansion. This unfolding is not the division of the root, but the continuous occurrence of the root's entry into time, differences and manifestations.π has thus become a mathematical footnote to this unbroken manifestation. It expresses the principle that "manifestation is never equal to root" in numerical form.π shows that a root can be confirmed but still cannot be exhausted; the world can appear but will never be completed; and mathematics, in the deepest part, has also reached the place where metaphysics has been watching.
Overture The ancients "avoided talking about" the roots, but why must we bring it up now?
Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism are at the extreme and do not speak directly about their roots. Confucianism ends in heaven, Taoism strongly calls it Tao, and Buddhism talks about emptiness and immediately sweeps away emptiness. This kind of silence is often understood by modern people as the limit of thought or a mysterious reservation. This article attempts to demonstrate that the ancients "avoided talking about it" was not because the roots could not be said, but because the roots were already in their living world and there was no need to be said. The existence of etiquette, Tao, and practice itself constitutes the protection of the roots, so not saying is not forgetting, but protecting. However, in a modern situation where roots have disappeared from daily life and technological systems have begun to pretend to be roots,"not saying" is no longer an automatic guard. It can become a deeper forgetting. The reason why the Root System talks about "cannot talk about" is not to offend the silence of the ancients, but to make room for "cannot talk about" in an era when silence is no longer understood. The silence of the ancients was sitting silently at home; the words of today's people are turning back and pointing the way after leaving home.
Science · AI · the Future Justifying experience: Discussing a non-repetitive true graphic version based on the inexhaustible nature of π
Modern epistemology elevates "repeatable and verifiable" to the only form of knowledge. Everything that cannot be verified repeatedly is downgraded to "subjective","unscientific" and "unreliable". Experiences, especially those that truly touch people, change people, and reconnect people with life, have long been lacking in status. This article attempts to use the inexhaustible nature of π to justify a more ancient insight: certainty does not mean that it can be said all; truth does not mean that it can be repeated.π is a definite number, but it cannot be fully expressed in a finite form. Experience is a real touch, but it cannot be replicated through scientific experiments. This article is not to deny science, but to draw a clear delineation of its boundaries and, beyond the boundaries, rediscover a path of certification for experience that does not require "repetition". This road is "return". Science proves truth through repetition, and root system distinguishes truth through return. If an experience can bring people back from chaos, return to righteousness from drift, and touch the unbroken line again from isolation, it is in its place and it is true.
Philosophy, Dialogue & Heritage The Book of Changes: A Line of Constancy under Change·Graphic Version
This article discusses: 1. Inner clues; 2. The "Yi" of the Book of Changes has three meanings; 3. From Tai Chi to the line; 4. The position and direction of the line; 5. Good or bad luck and regret: returning to the language of the system.
Roots & Presence Co-existence: Original commonality that precedes the tilt of direction and existence
This article defends the strict ontological priority of co-existence, which has not yet been fully recognized in the mainstream phenomenological tradition. The article believes that understanding the attribute of co-being or understanding the relationship between co-being and others fails to grasp the deeper meaning of "co-being". Co-existence is not a relationship, but a mediating unity that ontologically precedes all directions, the separation of all beings, and precedes Dasein itself. By re-examining Heidegger's discussion on coexistence, examining the tilt of direction as the original, and drawing on the theoretical resources of non-conservation of parity, we point out that Dasein is not the basis of coexistence, but a tilt of coexistence itself. The article further shows how communion generates language, thought, and commonly recognized structures, and ultimately points to an existential understanding rooted in commonality and mutuality rather than the isolated self.
Roots & Presence Explicit chains: structural analysis from synchronous loosening to intersection generation
This paper proposes the structural concept of "manifest chain" to describe how those unspeakable roots move from individual deep experience to public discernable manifestations. Manifestation is not a sudden event, but a structural chain. It contains five structural nodes that occur in order and can appear at the same time: synchronic appearance, sense of harmony, structural coreference, and intersection of common identification and manifestation. These five nodes are not psychological states or communication strategies, but an ontology sequence of "how many touch one". This paper attempts to demonstrate that any root of real common value is not manifested by a single individual, but is generated by the intersection of at least two directions at some retrievable position. Explicit chains describe the complete structure and generative logic of this process.
Roots & Presence Conditions of appearance: Asymmetry and appearance structure
"Manifestation"(Erscheinung) means that something stands out from an indiscernible background and becomes an object that can be experienced, named, and pointed to. Appearance is not a natural attribute of existence, but a structural event. This paper discusses the conditions for appearance and proposes that the first condition for appearance is asymmetry. Differences are possible only in a field that has undergone slight deviations; differences provide the possibility of information; information provide the possibility of structure; and structure provide the possibility of objectification. Completely symmetric fields do not produce manifestations. It may be a "have", but it cannot be seen. Therefore, exploring the conditions for manifestation is to explore the fundamental event of "how the world moved from invisible to visible." Asymmetry is the key to the door of manifestation.
Philosophy, Dialogue & Heritage Illustrated Version-Perspective of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism through Root Thought: An Attempt at a Structural Framework
This paper attempts to use the root thought as a structural framework to provide a new perspective on Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism. This perspective is not a judgment or understanding, but a structural "insight": among Confucianism's heaven and nature, Buddhism's emptiness and awareness, and Taoism's Tao and nature, a common underlying structure-root is identified. Roots cannot be objectified, but they allow all directions, relationships, and essence to be revealed. This article attempts to illustrate that Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism are not three parallel worlds that are mutually interconnected. They are three roads that pass through different entrances, each reaching the same root. The neutrality of root thought makes it not occupy the position of any family, but becomes a common structural language that the three families recognize each other.
Roots & Presence (Illustrated version) The breaking of parity of phenomena: existence as asymmetry is inevitable and invisible
The fundamental feature of the manifestation of the phenomenal world is not "existence" itself, but that "existence must enter manifestation in an asymmetric way." The breaking of parity in basic interactions is not only a physical fact, but also the basic operation of ontological structures: if the source wants to appear, it must break its own perfect symmetry through the occurrence of direction, differences, opposites, and content. Based on this insight, this paper attempts to re-understand the relationship between manifestation, presence and origin. The core judgment is that the parity breaking of a phenomenon is not an existing defect, but a condition for the possibility of appearance; perfect symmetry cannot be seen, experienced, and become a phenomenon. Therefore, we cannot return to an "unbroken" source, and we do not need to. Living soberly in the process of breaking defects, and at the same time no longer mistaking breaking defects for everything, is the structural meaning of "seeing nature".
Practice in the World Presence, direction and return: Structural rethinking of spiritual practice
This paper aims to use presence as an analytical framework to conduct a structural rethink of spiritual practice. The article believes that the core dilemma of practice is not the lack of a certain special experience or realm, but the concealment of "directionality" and the loss of "presence". By introducing core concepts such as "direction precedes content","return as redirection mechanism", and "boundary as self-sustaining condition", this paper attempts to outline a deep logical structure shared by spiritual practice: it is not a one-way path to the distance, but a continuous cycle of "identification and masking-interruption of inertia-return confirmation" around the "base presence". The discussion of this paper will strictly follow the descriptive and structural principles of presence thought, and will not provide ultimate answers or conduct psychological analysis. It will only focus on clarifying the internal directional structure of practice as an existential practice.
Macro-level Observation Direction, Boundary and Return: The Structural Practice of the Relationship between Man and Nature from the Perspective of Present Thought
This paper aims to conduct a structural examination of an environmental ethics and practical path called "boundary symbiosis" using the thought of presence as an analytical framework. This path attempts to seek a dynamic balance between ecological protection and human development. The core concepts of "directionality","boundary" and "return" of presence thought provide powerful tools for clarifying the internal logic of "boundary symbiosis". This paper believes that the essence of "boundary symbiosis" is not to propose an ultimate harmonious picture of the relationship between man and nature, but to build a set of practical structures aimed at maintaining the directional self-reliance of human actions in the ecological dimension. This structure establishes insurmountable directional boundaries through a "bottom line list", handles specific content conflicts through a "negotiation process", and achieves periodic returns and calibrations through a "review iteration" mechanism. This article will systematically explain the structural principles, operating mechanisms and moral foundation of this practical framework from the perspective of presence thought.
Macro-level Observation Looking at the directional structure of education from the perspective of presence: a framework reconstruction
Based on the framework of presence thought, this paper structurally reconstructs the topic of "sense of direction in education". The current education system is highly focused on "content delivery" and "knowledge mastery measurement", which may lead to students "lack of sense of direction." Through core concepts such as "direction comes before content","return is more important than progress", and "boundary is a condition for self-reliance" in presence thinking, this paper re-examines the possible structural changes in education at five levels: goals, methods, relationships, evaluation, and knowledge views. The reconstruction finds that there is the possibility of the internal structure of education expanding from "content center" to "direction identification". This expansion does not deny the value of content, but repositions it as "the manifestation of direction after it is identified." This paper aims to make the implicit directional structure in educational practice clearer through the framework of presence thought and provide a structural perspective for understanding the deep changes in education.

Practice in the World Relational Tension: When “We” Become One, Must “I” Be Lost?
This paper discusses: (1) the trap of fusion — when “we” swallows “I”; (2) the structure of a healthy relationship — a clear “I”, an intimate “we”; (3) building relational boundaries — from unconscious entanglement to structural coexistence; (4) return and calibration — for when a relationship drifts off course.
Macro-level Observation The distinction between public and private in the perspective of presence thought: from root origin to boundary self-reliance
The distinction between public and private in traditional ethics and political thought often falls into the content-level opposition and moral judgment of "public high and private low", resulting in behaviors being obscured by performances and choices being coerced by frameworks. Based on the "root-manifest layer" structure of presence thought, this paper proposes that public and private have the same origin at the root layer (presence), and the difference stems from the manifestation of the same "direction" at different points (oneself or everyone). The key to real discrimination lies not in the external behavioral label, but whether the "heart" is unobstructed and can be aligned with the structure of the presence (direction, boundary, return). By reconstructing the foundation of the distinction between public and private, this paper aims to transcend static opposition and moral judgment, reveal the structural relationship between public and private in the dynamic, and provide a new philosophical perspective for understanding the relationship between individual and collective.

Nanshan Jim's Notes Moving at the Boundary: A Structural Description of a Mode of Being
This paper describes an existential posture frequently encountered in philosophical practice but rarely analyzed explicitly—the state of continuously moving at the boundary. Characterized by not settling into any fixed position and by relation-centered rather than identity-centered living, it argues that moving at the boundary is not a marginal or transitional state but an independent, recognizable way of being.
Nanshan Jim's Notes The Recognizer: A Mode of Being Yet to Be Named
This paper describes and analyzes a role in philosophical practice that has long existed but never been formally named—the “recognizer.” Unlike the constructor and the analyst, the recognizer works by recognizing connections that already exist but have not yet been connected, keeping contact rather than producing results as its primary mode of operation.

Philosophy, Dialogue & Heritage From a common foundation to a path of practice: A systematic integration across traditions
Different spiritual traditions-Taoism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Sufi, Christian mysticism-differ greatly in external forms, language systems, and cultural backgrounds, but they seem to point to the same position in their deep structure: a fundamental existence that cannot be established, cannot be consumed, can be covered but cannot be destroyed. Based on previous comparative analysis of concepts such as "presence","root","vitality","conscience","Tao","emptiness" and "awareness", this paper extracts the common characteristics of this foundation, and then examines how traditions build their practical paths around this foundation. The study found that, despite varying forms, each traditional core method can be reduced to a response to the same set of operating logic: identifying obscurances, stopping stacking, and turning to direct contact. This discovery provides a testable framework for cross-traditional spiritual dialogue.

Drifting clouds, piece by piece — where do they go? The full moon, bright and plain, enters the frogs’ chorus. The boat of the heart drifts on, abiding nowhere; the evening breeze passes slowly through me. The night is hazy, the dream not yet over; the bright moon keeps the traveler company.
Nanshan Jim's Notes At Ease (a couplet)
A couplet. Eating, drinking, sleeping, playing; observing, hearing, learning, awakening, acting, verifying — all in accord. Horizontal scroll: At ease.
Nanshan Jim's Notes Reverence for Nature: A Maxim
Revere nature, revere cause and effect, revere the unknown; all things grow together, the ways run side by side. The Way is great, heaven is great, earth is great, the human is great too; the human, as teacher and elder, answers to all living things.
Nanshan Jim's Notes Early Spring (an ancient-style quatrain)
An ancient-style quatrain: last yellow leaves drift down, the wind still lazy; thin branches have quietly conceived the spring. Light cold has not yet parted from the passing years; new green fills the courtyard toward the dawn.
Nanshan Jim's Notes The Original Mind Is the Way (a couplet)
A couplet. Renounce the sage, discard cleverness — I lose my self; cut through Buddha, break the Dharma — form is emptiness. Only when sage and ordinary both dissolve does one accord with the Way; with no difference between Buddha and demon, suchness is. Horizontal scroll: The original mind is the Way.
Nanshan Jim's Notes The Way Transforms All Under Heaven (a couplet)
A couplet. The east wind sweeps vast and moistens Cathay; transforming rain falls in profusion over ten thousand lands. Horizontal scroll: The Way transforms all under heaven.
