--About"root-guarding strain"System Description (Part 1)
preface
This article is the first in a series on keeping roots and adapting, and aims to answer one of the most basic questions:What is this framework?
Subsequent chapters will discuss its location on the philosophical map, how to identify and return it, its internal mechanisms, and its boundaries and destination in turn. This article does just one thing: provide a clear and recognizable definition.
1. A common phenomenon
When facing difficulties, the strategy many people adopt is to increase methods-learn more skills, read more books, and ask more people. But if the problem is not that there are not enough methods, but that there is no own frame of reference, then all methods will become external instructions, always separated by a layer when executed.
This phenomenon is manifested in: knowing what to do, but always feeling wrong when doing it. Convince yourself that this is right, but your body is tense. Know that a certain method is effective, but using it on yourself is stuck. I am clearly moving forward, but I feel like I am not present.
These phenomena point to the same structural problem:Lack of a place to return to.
Keep the roots and adapt without increasing the method. It points to a location that is already owned but not yet recognized.
2. What is it not to stay rooted and adapt (clarify boundaries)
Before defining what it is, confirm what it is not.
2.1 It's not a psychological conditioning technique
Psychological regulation techniques process emotions, adjust cognition, and change behavioral patterns. They presuppose an object that needs to be adjusted. Root-guarding strain does not adjust anything-it points to a position where adjustment may no longer be needed.
Analogy: Psychological adjustment is tidying up the room and putting things back in place. Keeping your roots and adapting is not about tidying up the room, but recognizing that you are living in the room.
2.2 It's not a code of ethics
Keeping the roots and adapting does not presuppose the direction of good, and does not require sincerity, kindness and compassion as a prerequisite. It only requires one thing:A confirmed frame of reference. The content of this frame of reference is confirmed by the user themselves, and the framework itself does not stipulate it.
This means that people with different value orientations can use this framework without first changing their value judgments.
2.3 Not an effort."
Keeping the roots and adapting does not require working harder to stay the roots. It does not grasp something hard, but recognizes that it has deviated. Identification does not require extra effort, just stopping and taking a look.
Supplementary note: Here we need to distinguish between two levels of "root":
Fundamental roots: inherent, unsettable, and indestructible. It does not need to be "cultivated"-it is there.
Confirmed frame of reference: The sense of direction formed by the individual based on the basal root. It may be adjusted and updated, but it is not built out of thin air-it is the identification and confirmation of the underlying root.
The "guarding" of root-guarding strain points to the frame of reference of confirmation (returning to the position you confirm), while the underlying meaning of "root" is always present. Each "return" is to confirm your own frame of reference during contact with the basal roots.
When efforts to stay rooted become the content of the operation, the operation itself has deviated from the positioning of the framework-efforts means using external drivers, while staying rooted and adapting depends on contact, not driving.
2.4 It's not about staying in good shape"
Stay rooted and adapt without committing to a specific feeling state. It does not promise peace, happiness, or security. While performing the response operation, you may still be anxious, still angry, and still sad. The difference is that the operator knows where he is, even if that position is accompanied by discomfort.
"Maintaining good state is purposeful-pursuing specific feelings.&" quot; Keeping the roots is positional-confirming the current position, no matter what feelings accompany it."
2.5 Not always right"
Keeping the roots and adapting will not avoid mistakes. It does not promise that the result will be right every time it responds. It only promises to be able to return after deviating.& quot; Not making mistakes is not its goal. It is to be able to recover if you miss it.
3. What is root-abiding and responsive (a precise definition)
After eliminating the above misunderstandings, a precise definition can be given:
Keeping the roots and adapting is an existential posture that maintains continuous contact with the frame of reference that one recognizes during change. This frame of reference is a concrete manifestation of the basal root at the individual level-it confirms that "I am here", and this "I am here" is possible because the basal root is always present.
In other words: the frame of reference is the position you identify, and the base root is what makes this position possible. The root-guarding operation is a frame of reference, but its effectiveness is based on the indestructibility of the basal roots.
The key parts of the definition are broken down one by one.
3.1 It is a gesture of being, not an action"
Postures are continuous, low-level, and context-independent. Actions are temporary, optional, and context-specific. Keeping the roots and adapting does not require anything to be done, it requires where to be.
When an operation needs to be completed within a specific period of time, it falls into the category of behavior. When a state does not need to start or end, but is just the way it works itself, it belongs to the category of gestures.
3.2 The frame of reference is self-confirming"
The frame of reference is not a rule given from the outside, a truth told by others, or something to believe. It is after experience, thinking, trial and error that I am standing here. It may be a cognitive structure, a basis for judgment, a sense of direction, or a perception that I am.
The nature of the frame of reference is not correct, but confirmed. There is no need to prove that it is effective for everyone, just confirm that it is authentic to the operator.
3.3 Operation is continuous contact, not grasping"
"Grasping means force, tension, and defense.& quot; Contact means that the existence of the frame of reference can be sensed, but it does not require a tight grip.
When the deviation occurred, the operator sensed that I had left that coordinate and returned. You don't need to hold on to the frame of reference all the time to prevent deviations-you just need to know where it is and go back if you deviate.
3.4 Strain is a natural extension of keeping roots
When the operator maintains contact in his own frame of reference, the way he responds to the outside world changes-not because he has learned coping skills, but because he has a position to return to and will not be taken away in the change. Adjustments, responses, changes in methods-these still happen, but no longer as externally driven passive reactions, but actions emanating from a confirmed position.
Adapting is not a flexible skill, but a rooted flexibility.
4. Four-layer structure of root-guarding strain
The following four layers describe the dimensions of this gesture in actual operation. The four layers form a cycle, with each layer corresponding to an operable position.
Level 1: See
When deviations occur, the operator often does not know that he has deviated. I just felt that something was wrong, but I couldn't tell what was wrong. The first layer's function is to see where you are. No judgment, no adjustment, no criticism-just seeing.
The operations of seeing include: lengthening the timeline to see the current situation, focusing attention on one thing at hand, distinguishing superficial phenomena from underlying structures, and seeing the other side that may be ignored.
By the time the question of where it is now can be answered, the operator has left the floating state.
Level 2: Adjustment
After seeing it, do not act immediately. Let's first confirm one question: Is the current pace appropriate? quot;
Sometimes what is needed is not faster or more, but pause. Sometimes what needs to be adjusted is the rhythm, not the direction. This layer does not change the goal, but only adjusts the speed and method of achieving the goal.
Level 3: Execution
After the rhythm is adjusted, enter the action level. This level involves: judging the most important things at the moment, putting limited resources where they are needed, knowing when to stop, and regularly confirming whether the direction is shifted.
The operation at this level is not to do it harder, but to do it in a direction.
Level 4: Self-reliance
Can operators confirm their position when there is no external evaluation, no immediate feedback, and no one confirms that they have done the right thing?
Self-sustaining operates independently of external references. It doesn't mean you don't need others, but it means that you won't be scattered even if there are no others.
When the four layers form a cycle-seeing → adjusting → executing → self-sustaining → seeing again-the root-guarding response transforms from a posture to a self-sustaining system.
5. The boundary of keeping the roots and adapting
Root-abiding and adapting has its applicable boundaries. Acknowledging boundaries is more important than claiming to be omnipotent.
5.1 It does not solve rootless problems
In a fundamental sense, there is no "rootless" person. The fundamental root is inherent and indestructible, and it is always present. But at the operational level, some people may not be able to reach their roots for the time being-the cover is too deep and difficult to identify.
Keeping the roots and adapting is not responsible for "unveiling all coverages" nor is it responsible for "establishing" roots. Its purpose is to help you maintain contact, identify deviations, and return to position on the basis that you are already able to contact the roots. If the covering needs to be removed before reaching the roots, that is another level of work-guarding the roots and adapting not to cover the area.
This is determined by its nature: it does not create new things, only allows existing things to be re-contacted.
5.2 It does not replace professional treatment
For severe psychopathologies-severe depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, depersonalization, etc. -staying at the root is not an alternative. In these states, the underlying conditions of return may themselves have been compromised, and professional intervention is usually a recovery step that precedes framework operations.
5.3 It does not change external conditions
Rudimentary response deals with the operator's relationship with its own frame of reference, not the external environment. It can improve stability in stressful situations, but it cannot eliminate the source of stress. It can stay sober in the relationship, but it cannot ensure that the other person does not cross the line. Its scope of action is internal, not external.
6. How to recognize this gesture
The following two questions can be used to identify whether the operator is in a defensive posture:
problema: Are you currently in continuous contact with your own confirmed reference system rather than relying on external references?
If judgment relies on external confirmation (reactions of others, data verification, external approval) to confirm that it is correct, the operator may have deviated from a stance of being loyal to the root. If I can still confirm that I am here without external feedback, the operator is in this posture.
Question 2: After deviating, can you return to the position you have confirmed?
Keeping the roots and adapting does not require never deviating from it. It only requires you to come back after a deviation. If it is impossible to return after a deviation, or if the return requires a long recovery time, the operator may need to intensify the practice of returning to this side.
If the speed of return is accelerating and the action of return is becoming lighter-the operator is deepening this posture.
conclusion
Keeping the roots and adapting is not something that needs to be learned. It's a wayrecognizesomething.
Everyone is naturally in this position at certain moments, in certain areas-just without naming it. When you focus on something, forget time, and forget self-judgment, you are in the process of adapting. When you can still make clear judgments under pressure rather than being overwhelmed by emotions, you are in the process of adapting.
Keeping the roots and adapting is not a new invention. It just found a name for a gesture that already existed but has not been named.
